Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statements

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry is an established international, scientific, open access, online-only journal. This journal provides an open-access forum for the exchange of information about contemporary, new, and significant research in pediatric dentistry throughout the world. The scope is therefore broad, ranging from original research articles, case reports, reviews, editorial comments, and letters to the editor within all aspects of pediatric dentistry including education, practice and research. The journal is published in three times in every year (April, August, and December), and its publication language is English. The journal does not have article processing charges or article submission charges. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry performs double blind reviewing, where both the reviewer and author remain anonymous throughout the review process. At least two reviewers are needed for peer review. All type of submissions to Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry is subjected to peer-review.

The editorial and publication process of the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows the principles of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry accepts manuscripts which are performed under the principles of international ethical guidelines. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry is committed to the highest standards of research and publication ethics. If ethical misconduct is suspected, the Editorial Board will act in accordance with the relevant international rules of publication ethics. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry reserves right to take all necessary actions based on the principles of COPE guidelines. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry reserves right to take all necessary actions based on the principles of these guidelines. Author(s) have full responsibility for all the statements in their study. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry accepts only submissions which fit to journal’s Author Guidelines. Manuscripts which do not follow the format and style of the journal may be returned to the authors for initial revision or rejected. The journal reserves the right to make any further formal changes and language corrections necessary in a manuscript accepted for publication.

Responsibilities of Authors

By submitting a manuscript to the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry, the author(s) warrant that the manuscript is their own, original work and that it has neither been published previously nor is currently being considered for publication elsewhere. They also warrant that the sources of any ideas and/or words in the manuscript that are not their own have been properly attributed through appropriate citations and/or quotes.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows to the authorship criteria defined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Authors should fill and each author should sign the Authorship statement, Copyright Transfer, Financial Disclosure, and Acknowledgement Permission Form (ACFAP) during the submission.

When submitting an article to Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry, authors agree to transfer all copyright ownership, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, to Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry. All authors must sign the ACFAP form including the copyright transfer agreement statement.

Authors should declare acknowledgements, conflict of interest statement, ethics statement, informed consent, author contributions, funding, and data availability at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article. All authors must have seen and approved the final version of the article, agreed to its publication and signed the ACFAP form. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry gives highly importance on the comments and suggestions of reviewers to reach its publication quality. Being a reviewer in the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry is voluntarily. Reviewers are free to decline invitations to review particular manuscripts at their discretion. They should also not accept manuscript review assignments for which they may have a potential conflict of interest in performing the review.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry requests the reviewers to send their reports within 14 days. If additional time is need, reviewer(s) should directly contact to the Editorial Office (info@contemppediatrdent.org).

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry not only asks the Reviewers to provide the Editor(s) with the information needed to reach a decision but also to instruct the authors to help the paper to be strengthened. Negative review should explain to the authors the major weaknesses of their manuscript and guide how to improve the manuscript. We also welcome confidential comments to the editor.

Responsibilities of Editors

The Editor-in-Chief has all responsibility for final decision of a submitted manuscript. The Editor-in-Chief consults with the associate editors and other members of the editorial team, as well as with reviewers, in making publication decisions. Editors of Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry must follow the journal’s policies.

Editors are responsible for keeping integrity of double blind review process. Editorial decisions must be done in an objective and scientific basis. Decisions must not be affected by the origins of nationality, ethnicity, race or similar characteristics of the authors. Decisions must not also be affected local governments or agencies. Editors should keep any information regarding submitted manuscript confidential and should not share with anyone other than the reviewers, potential reviewers, editors, and the publisher. Editor-in-Chief should protect the integrity of the published articles and should take all necessary action in accordance with COPE guidelines in case of plagiarism and misconduct.

Human and Animal Studies

The authors should follow the relevant guidelines and regulations of the ethics committee and declare that they have conducted all research accordingly.

Authors should declare an ethics statement to confirm the details of the name of the ethics committee and decision ID number, if available. The ethics statement must be declared at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry also strongly encourages the authors to write the ethics statement in the “Methods” section.

If ethical approval is not required by national laws, the authors should declare that they have conducted all research in accordance with relevant international guidelines. The authors may also provide an exemption from the ethics committee, if it is available. Authors should declare the related ethics statement at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article.

The authors must declare that informed consent was obtained from all participants and/or their legal guardians in research and experiments involving human subjects.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry may request from the authors to submit proof of ethics committee certificate. In case of any doubt, the journal also reserves the right to be in touch with the approving committee for any further clarification.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows the ICMJE description of the clinical trial, which is described as: “Any research study that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes”. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry strongly encourages authors to follow relevant guidelines regarding clinical trial protocols and register the clinical trial in a publicly accessible registry prior to participant recruitment. Here are some of the organizations in which clinical trials can be registered. WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), Clinical Trials.gov or the EU Clinical Trials Register. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry strongly encourages authors to declare the trial registration number and registration date in the beginning of the “Methods” section.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows the CARE guidelines in reporting Case Reports. Studies involving patient photograph and/or any other identifiers should include the informed consent which should include a signed statement from patient and/or legal guardian giving permission to publication.  Authors should also make all actions to protect anonymity of the subjects. If only verbal informed consent was obtained, a full explanation for why this was not obtained in written form should be included, along with the name of the local ethics committee which gave approval for verbal consent. A statement confirming consent to publish should be included at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article. Consent to Publish is a journal requirement and cannot be exempted by an ethics committee. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry reserves the right to contact with the authors to provide and give proof of Patient Consent Form.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry asks authors to proof whether the institutional and national guide for the care and use of laboratory animals was followed. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry strongly encourages authors to follow guidelines of International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) when submitting a study performed in animals.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows the rules on ethical stem cell research outlined in the ISSCR Guidelines for Stem Cell Research and Clinical Translation.  A statement confirming the use of human stem cells and related materials and that all experiments were performed in accordance with all safety considerations, ethical guidelines and applicable regulations and the details of the name of the ethics committee and decision ID number should be included at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article.


Publishing Policy

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry (Contemp Pediatr Dent) is an international, scientific, open access, online-only publication. The journal is published in three times in every year (April, August, and December), and its publication language is English. Articles published in this journal are evaluated in a double-blind review process. The journal does not have article processing charges or article submission charges.

Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the manuscript will be forwarded to the Production Editor, who is responsible for the production of the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry. Production tracking is performed by the Production Editor of Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry. Production Editor contacts the corresponding author via email. For any concerns; authors should contact the Production Editor (info@contemppediatrdent.org).

When proofs are ready, the corresponding author will receive an email, where they will find a PDF of page proofs and proofreading instructions. Authors should carefully check the galley proof. Authors should respond the email within 48 hours with annotated proof corrections. Authors should require Acrobat Reader read and make corrections on galley proof this file. Authors are strongly advised to check the proof very carefully and correct typesetting errors. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be evaluated by Production Editor. Authors should note that the corresponding author is responsible for all statements made in the work.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry aims to publish accepted articles as soon as possible as online first. The manuscript PDFs published is the last-reviewed, accepted versions, and have been formatted, copy edited, and approved by the corresponding author. The online first version of an article will be freely accessible to all readers until the time of its publication in an issue of the journal. The early online articles appear as PDFs approximately four to ten weeks before publication in an issue of Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry. The Online First articles will have valid DOI numbers but will not have volume, issue and page numbers. The official publication date will be the date of the article’s first online posting. Online first articles are assigned DOIs, and they are in final form, it is not allowed to make further changes on online first published version.

After approximately eight to twelve weeks, online first articles are assigned to the following issue and they have volume, issue and page numbers.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry does not have any article processing charges, article submission charges or article publishing charges.

Peer Review Policy

Peer review overview

Peer review processes of the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry mainly aims to strength the manuscript and improve the quality of the manuscript. To be published in Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry, manuscripts should be in accordance with the aim and scope of the journal and should represent an advance in understanding likely to influence thinking in contemporary pediatric dental practice, education and research.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry performs double blind reviewing, where both the reviewer and author remain anonymous throughout the review process. At least two reviewers are needed for peer review. All type of submissions to Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry is subjected to peer-review. Corrections of published articles are also being peer-reviewed. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry gives highly importance on the comments and suggestions of reviewers to reach its publication quality.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry makes every effort to ensure the highest standards in publication ethics are upheld and takes all forms of misconduct seriously. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry will take all necessary action in accordance with COPE guidelines. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry performs plagiarism check and it is required for each study that has undergone the review process. The iThenticate plagiarism checker software is used for plagiarism detection and the acceptable similarity ratio is less than 20%.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry uses secure online submission system. Reviewers are asked to send their peer-review reports via the online submission system. However, Editor-in-Chief may contact to reviewers via email in case of any technical issues.

Peer review steps

1. Initial Editorial Check

All submitted articles to the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry are initially subjected to technical check for its appropriateness to journal’s Author Guidelines, and aim and scope by the Editor-in-Chief. This step is the one to confirm whether the submitted articles are in line with the aim and scope of the journal, have adequate language, have original novelty and meet publication policies. Of these articles which cannot meet these requirements are rejected without external review. Decision mails are sent to the corresponding authors immediately. Eligible articles are sent to the assigned Associate Editor or handled by Editor-in-Chief for further review.

2. Reviewer Selection

The Editor-in-Chief and/or assigned Associate Editor send the potential manuscripts to be of potential interest to journal’s readership for formal review. At least two reviewers are needed for peer review. Editor(s) choose the potential reviewers according to many factors, including expertise, reputation, specific recommendations and own previous experience of a reviewer’s characteristics. Each article needs to be evaluated by at least two reviewers. Reviewers are obliged to guarantee that they will not share any process or document about the study they are evaluating.

Reviewers are invited to review a manuscript via online submission system. Reviewers are asked to log in to the online submission and peer review system of the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry and create an account as a reviewer. In case of technical problems, editors may contact to the potential reviewers via personal email.

3. Reviewer Reports

Reviewers are kindly asked to review the papers based on the following questions:

  • Does title reflect the study?
  • Is abstract simple and understandable? Does it reflect the entire text?
  • Is literature check is acceptable in Introduction? Is rationale of the study clearly stated? Are aim and hypotheses of the study clearly stated?
  • Are the validity of the approach, quality of the data and quality of presentation are acceptable? Is methodology appropriate? Are appropriate statistical tests performed to justify the findings?
  • Are findings and results of the study clearly described? Do tables and figures represent the findings of the study? Do tables and figures meet appropriate technical requirements? Are legends understandable?
  • Is discussion properly structured? Are findings of the study clearly discussed with previous studies? Are strengths and limitations of the study described?
  • Are references related to study? Is literature check appropriate to discuss the findings of the study?
  • Is language acceptable? Does the manuscript need additional language revision?

We ask reviewers to keep their identify confidential.  They should not identify themselves to authors while the manuscript is under consideration without the editor’s knowledge. Once a reviewer has revealed his or her identity to the author, authors must inform the editor as soon as possible.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry does not suppress reviewers’ reports. However, if there is rude language or comments, we ask reviewers to avoid statements that may cause needless offence. Editors may seek advice about submitted papers not only from technical reviewers but also on any aspect of a paper that raises concerns such as ethical issues.

Reviewers may like to see the revised manuscripts. When reviewers agree to revise a manuscript, we consider this a commitment to review subsequent revisions. Once the authors have made appropriate revision and submitted revision files, we generally send the revised manuscript to the same reviewers. In case of any kind of return to reviewers for further advice, particularly in cases where they disagree with each other, or where the authors believe they have been misunderstood on points of fact, we may need any further advice and the revised manuscript may be also sent to additional reviewers.

Editors may not send a resubmitted manuscript back to the reviewers if it seems that the authors have not made a serious attempt to address the criticisms and have not properly responded to each concern.

4. Editorial Decision

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry gives highly importance on the comments and suggestions of reviewers to reach its publication quality. Peer review processes of the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry mainly aims to strength the manuscript and improve the quality of the manuscript. Thus, the arguments and comments raised by each reviewer and by the authors are carefully evaluated by the Editors Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry.

As in all publishing decisions, the ultimate decision whether to publish is the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry. The Editor-in-Chief then makes a decision based on the Associate Editor and Reviewers’ advice. The possible decisions are:

  • Accept
  • Revision required: Authors are invited to revise the manuscript and to address specific concerns before a final decision is reached.
  • Reject and resubmit: Authors are invited to make significantly extensive revision and then resubmit as a new submission.
  • Reject: Authors are NOT invited to make any revision or resubmission.

Authorship

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows to the authorship criteria defined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

Authors should be listed appropriately according to the criteria of ICMJE and significantly contribution to the study.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry specifically uses the following criteria for authorship and strongly encourages authors to design Authors list accordingly:

  4. Drafting article

  6. Final approval (essential for all authors)

Authors’ declaration and warranties

By submitting an article to the Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry, the authors must certify and warrant that:

Corresponding author is the primer contact and have responsibility to submit article and contact with journal.

Prior to submission, the authorship list and order must be agreed between all listed authors, and they must also agree on who will take on the role of corresponding or contact author. It is the responsibility of the corresponding or contact author to reach consensus with all co-authors regarding all aspects of the article including the authorship order and to ensure all correct affiliations have been listed.

Changes in authorship

All Authors must approve any changes in authorship including those being added or removed, during review process and/or after publication

Corresponding Author has the full the responsibility to inform and contact with the editorial office with a strong evidence and full explanation about why the change was necessary. If a change in authorship is necessary after publication of the article, this will be amended via a post-publication notice. Any changes in authorship must comply with our criteria for authorship.

Acknowledgments

Authors should declare any individuals who have contributed to the article but who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed by name and affiliation at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article.

Plagiarism and Misconduct

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry makes every action to meet the highest standards in publication ethics are upheld and takes all forms of misconduct seriously. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry reserves right to take all necessary actions based on the principles of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

Here are some of the issues to be subjected as misconduct by Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry; plagiarism, authorship, duplicate submission and/or publication, self-plagiarism, affiliation misrepresentation, unethical research, undisclosed competing interests, image manipulation, data fabrication, peer review manipulation, citation manipulation. All the authors of the manuscript will be equally responsible for any kind of misconduct.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry makes every effort to ensure the highest standards in publication ethics are upheld and takes all forms of misconduct seriously. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry follows to the authorship criteria defined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Contemporary pediatric Dentistry defines the sub-components of authorship as follows: conception and design (essential for all authors) , acquisition of data,  interpretation of data, drafting article, revision article, final approval (essential for all authors). Authors should fill and each author should sign the Authorship statement, Copyright Transfer, Financial Disclosure, and Acknowledgement Permission Form (ACFAP form) which includes the authorship declaration during the submission. Authors should declare the authorship at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article. In case of any doubt, Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry will deal with authorship misconduct according to COPE guidelines. Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry reserves right to contact to the authors’ institution for clarification.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry does not consider any manuscripts that are suspected of having an undisclosed competing interest.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry strongly encourages authors to ensure all data contained within their manuscript is accurate and correctly represents their work. Authors should declare the data availability statement at the “Declarations” section located at the end of article

All peer reviewers at Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry are strongly advised to read and consider the COPE Ethical Guidelines for reviewers before accepting to review a manuscript and expected to treat any article and associated materials received in the course of the review as confidential. Any reviewer found to have committed misconduct by appropriating the work of others will be permanently removed from the peer review database and reported to their institution.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry interdicts any kind of inappropriately self-cite or inappropriately cite each other’s work or where editors or reviewers coerce authors to cite papers from their own previously published papers, without clear justification as to why those papers are necessary to cite.

Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry may request from the authors to submit proof of ethics committee certificate. In case of any doubt, the journal also reserves the right to be in touch with the approving committee for any further clarification.

In case of confirmation and/or doubt on any kind of misconduct, Contemporary Pediatric Dentistry reserves right to contact to the authors to let them have a valid explanation. In case of unacceptable explanation, the review or publication process will be finalized as rejection or retraction, respectively.


Financial and Competing Interests

All listed authors must declare any competing interests (financial, commercial, legal, or professional relationship) relevant to, or which can be perceived to be relevant to the article.
